MUMIE Ilias integration for teachers

This article is meant for teachers and instructors, who would like to use content from MUMIE courses (e.g. OMB+) in their own ILIAS course.
Please note, that the MUMIE integration only works, if the necessary plugins have been installed. In case they are missing, please get in touch with your ILIAS administrator.

This article applies to MumieTask v5.0 or later (requires ILIAS 11).

MUMIE-Integration in ILIAS – Overview

The connection between MUMIE courses (OMB+, HM4mint, Pool, and others) and the exercise pool to ILIAS is handled via single sign-on: students are logged in automatically and gain direct access to the course and exercises without having to create a separate account-for instance with OMB+.

Through the ILIAS plugin, you can embed both the exercises from the MUMIE courses and individual exercises, entire exercise worksheets, or worksheets with a custom deadline from the exercise pool, so that students can work on them directly. A demo access to the exercise pool is available at https://pool.mumie.net/pool/browser.

The points achieved are transferred automatically into the ILIAS gradebook and assigned there to the individual users. On the side of OMB+ and the other courses, the individuals remain anonymous-specifically regarding the question about tests: if individual OMB+ exercises (or exercises from other courses or from the pool) are embedded in ILIAS, the points flow automatically into the ILIAS gradebook, personalized only on the ILIAS side, and therefore GDPR-compliant.

There are no restrictions in terms of content scope: all existing exercise sheets (over 400) as well as all exercises and interactive visualizations (over 1,000, some multilingual, from Analysis 1+2, Linear Algebra, and Stochastics) can be used without any problem.

What is not yet possible in ILIAS is for an instructor to adapt an exercise in the pool themselves (notation or the like) or to compile their own new exercise sheets. So far, this function is supported only by the Moodle plugin (see Creating and importing your own pool worksheets).

Here, you are also able to switch off automatic grade synchronization for this MumieTask, and set a Deadline: either no deadline, a fixed deadline for everyone, or (only for worksheets) an individual time limit that starts once a student first opens the task.

Note: a worksheet cannot be switched Online until either a fixed deadline or a time limit has been set here.

How to create multiple MUMIE Tasks at once

Instead of creating MUMIE Tasks one by one, you can also open the multi problem selector and import several problems or worksheets at the same time.

Step Description Example
1 When creating a new MUMIE Task, click on Open multi problem selector in the section Create additional MUMIE Problems or Worksheets. MumieTask form
2 A window opens in which you can browse, filter and select several MUMIE problems or worksheets at once and import them.
3 A separate MUMIE Task is created for each imported problem or worksheet.

How to view grades and grant individual deadline extensions

Every MUMIE Task has its own Grade Overview tab, where you can see the current grade of every participant.

Step Description Example
1 Open the MUMIE Task and go to the Grade Overview tab. gradeOverview
2 Here you see every participant's current grade. If a student has submitted several answers, you can pick a different submission to override the grade that was automatically synchronized.
3 You can also grant an individual deadline extension to single students, for example if they were unable to finish in time. A manually selected grade is not affected by this.

Note: The Force update button (Grades tab) also resets any manually overridden grades for this MUMIE Task, in addition to reloading the latest grades from the server.

How to add a MUMIE server to ILIAS

You can easily add a new MUMIE server when editing a MUMIE Task. Keep in mind that you cannot edit or delete already existing MUMIE servers. If you ever need to do that, please contact your administrator.

Step Description Example
1 Open a MumieTask, go to Settings and click on the button Add MUMIE Server add server tab in task form
2 Enter a name for the new server configuration and the URL and click Save addServerForm

Managing availability and visibility

MUMIE Tasks provide the option to restrict the availability and visibility of the task to normal users (users with only reading permission e.g. students / course members / etc).

Step Description Example
1 Open the MUMIE Task and go to Settings and select the Availability sub-tab. availability tab
2 Click on the Online checkbox to make the task visible and usable to all users with reading permission
3 You can additionally select a Limited Availability Period. Outside of this period users will not be able to access the MUMIE Task and only grades that were achieved within the selected time frame will be be taken into account for grade synchronization.
Warning:
Please only use this from to change the Limited Availability Period. Otherwise some grades might not get properly synchronized.

If you have changed this option somewhere else by accident, you need to trigger a forced grade update. You can do this by either changing the Limited Availability Period form the MUMIE Task settings or clicking on the Force update button in the grade settings.

Important notice

Currently, grades for the MUMIE Tasks are only updated when their individual Learning Progress is viewed or a course containing them is opened. This means that we cannot guarantee that all grades are up-to-date, when they are accessed by other means than the one described above.
